Thanksgiving day openings and midnight deals at both stores and online jumped almost 13 percent in US retailers' sales over the four-day holiday weekend.
According to a survey from the National Retail Federation, some 140 million consumers visited US stores and websites from Thanksgiving through Sunday.
Total spending for the weekend rose to US$59 billion, up about 13 percent from a year ago.
The industry group said, on average, a holiday shopper spent US$423 this weekend, 6 percent higher than last year.
