US President nominates pair for security team

US President Barack Obama has nominated Republican senator Chuck Hagel to lead the Pentagon as Defence Secretary and counterterrorism veteran John Brennan to head the CIA.

66 year-old Hagel is expected to get particularly rough treatment at the Senate due to his criticism of America's "Jewish lobby" and opposition to certain Iran sanctions.

And if voted in, he also faces the challenge of a trimmed military budget.

Meanwhile, 57 year-old CIA nominee Paul Brennan is expected to get an easier ride in the Senate although he could face questions over his support for ehanced interrogation techniques.

For more on how the two nominees will fit into the Obama administration and the challenges ahead for the US security organisations, 938LIVE's Mubin Saadat spoke to Military Historian Professor Brian Farrell from the National University of Singapore.
