US sues to block $20 bln AB InBev takeover of Modelo

The US government has filed a lawsuit seeking to stop Anheuser-Busch InBev, or ABI, from taking over Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo.

ABI owns half of Grupo Modelo.

The US Department of Justice said the US$20 billion deal may mean higher US beer prices.

ABI criticized the suit as inconsistent with the law, the facts and the reality of the market place.

It plans to vigorously contest the authorities' action in federal court.

The move put on hold the takeover announced last June that would bring together brands like Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona in the world's largest beer company,
giving it a 46 percent share in the US market.
