Qian Jiayi, a rich man’s daughter, returns from overseas studies in the UK. She organizes a trip to an outer island, with her old classmates Qi Mingxing, Bai Xuena, Chen Jingli and Liang Lulu for company. The five of them take a dip in the sea during the night. Swimming under the moonlight, the sea speaks of their life’s desires:
Qian Jiayi wishes that her boyfriend will love her forever. She is preparing for her wedding to fiancé Du Jiahong, a wine trader.
Chen Jingli wishes to find true love. She has just broken up with Xie Zhifei.
Liang Lulu wishes for fame and fortune. Jobless at the moment, she is living a life of leisure.
Qi Mingxing wishes for good health. Her mother is lying in a vegetative state at the hospital.
Bai Xuena wishes for a happy family. Her current beau is Hu Yongcheng, an IT engineer based in Shanghai.
One night, they chance to meet famous artist Zhou Yilin, who is inspired by the scene to paint “Beauties in Bath”. Unaware of his status, the five women ask Zhou for the painting as a memento. His attitude changes all of a sudden, rejects their request, becomes morose, and even drives them away. Thinking he is a mad man, the five women dismiss the incident as an episode in their life.
Jiayi comes from a wealthy background and manages the family travel business. On the eve of her wedding, she is pleasantly surprised to discover that her fiancé Du Jiahong has taken pains to purchase the painting from a collector in France as a wedding present for her and to flaunt their wealth. The painting becomes a symbol of her bliss. Among the five women, Jiayi is the first to possess it.
Alas, it is not long before Jiayi unexpectedly finds out that Jiahong is secretly seeing Lulu. Bold and cynical, Lulu had a fling with Jiahong while Jiayi was studying in the UK. Without doing too much harm, the matter would have passed, but Jiayi takes it badly. The headstrong Jiayi calls off the wedding out of fury, and sever her friendship with Lulu. The other three women stand by her.
Jiahong starts to woo Lulu, and to spite Jiayi, he plans to give away “Beauties in Bath” to Lulu. Unfortunately for him, he is arrested for commercial fraud and subsequently declared bankrupt. The painting is sold to settle his debts. Lulu’s dream of marrying into a rich family is dashed. By a twist of fate, her opportunity to live a blissful life is thwarted.
Bai Xuena is married by this time. With Jiayi’s recommendation, she secures a job at the travel company belonging to Jiayi’s father. Her career progresses as a result of this connection. Unfortunately, her husband Hu Yongcheng is a weakling who aims for what is beyond his reach and does not have a stable job. His mother Mo Lihua is a tough woman who does not get along well with Xuena. Xuena’s marriage causes much anguish to her, but she keeps it to herself for fear of inviting mockery.
Qi Mingxing is a career woman who works in a well-known travel agency. Pursuing a career at the expense of her love life, she is left on the shelf. Although she craves for love, there is yet a man who has captured her heart because she sets too high a standard and is obviously distrustful of men.
After leaving Jiahong, Jiayi vows to marry the best man she can ever find to prove her worth. During the search, she meets Shi Zhuangbi, a mild natured family man. Sadly, Jiayi despises his occupation as a cook, thereby causing a dent on their relationship.
Among the five women, Chen Jingli appears to be the most blessed. She is married into a wealthy family, and her husband Xie Zhifei is a giant in the hotel industry. Both are a loving couple.
Fate does go against one’s wishes, when Zhifei died in an accident while on an overseas trip. Jingli the young widow has to pit against Xie Shanhe, the representative of the Xie family, to inherit her late husband’s large estate. Losing her husband leaves a void in Jingli’s emotional life.
Frustrated at her failure to meet the love of her life, Lulu vows to carve out a super career or marry a good husband to stand tall before Jiayi and the other girls. To associate with the rich, she begins to lead a dissolute life. But fate seems to make a fool out of her, for she never finds a better man and is even conned of her love and money by a man. On account of their friendship, Jingli extends a helping hand to lift her out of trouble. Among the five women, she is a failure who suffers the most.
At the 10th anniversary of their class gathering, Jingli purchases “Beauties in Bath” out of interest. At this point, Jiayi exposes her secret relationship with Zhuangbi. In an act of revenge, Jiayi wickedly bribes Yang Ruiqi to accuse Zhuangbi of raping her. In a bid to prove Zhuangbi’s innocence, Jingli prepares for a showdown with Jiayi.
Disillusioned by the series of events, Zhuangbi grabs the opportunity to accept a job overseas, in an attempt to leave the place which has brought him much misery.
Surprisingly, Yongcheng the good-for-nothing has designs on Jingli after Xuena fails to satisfy his material and emotional needs. Much to his chagrin, Jingli views him with contempt and tries her best to steer clear of him. Jingli does not have the courage to reveal the truth to Xuena, that Yongcheng has a hold on her; he knows that the purported will by Zhifei is forged by Jingli. If this comes to light, Jingli will lose everything; hence, she is careful not to antagonize Yongcheng. Unable to endure Yongcheng blackmailing her, Jingli gives the valuable painting to her god-son Tian Tian, the son of Yongcheng and Xuena. And so, the masterpiece ends up in Xuena’s hands.
Yongcheng and Xuena are devastated when Tian Tian is diagnosed with a rare illness. To pay the enormous medical bill, and without Jingli’s knowledge, Xuena sold the painting to Mingxing who has been lusting after it.
In a bid to please Jiayi, Xuena takes it upon herself to be the mediator to request Mingxing to give up the painting. But her attempt backfires when Mingxing and Lulu taunt her for being a weakling. To seek revenge, the naughty Lulu deliberately divulges that at one time, Yongcheng was seeing Jingli. Xuena flies into a fury over the humiliation, and her relationship with Yongcheng worsens.
Having to face family problems, friendship and love issues, Jiayi left without a word. While everyone was searching high and low for Jiayi, they got to know that Jiayi was killed in a car accident. Her organs were donated to designated patients, her mother Song Li and her good friend Mingxing who were suffering from kidney failure and lost of sight.
Facing one another again after all that happened, the women are overwhelmed with emotions. Whatever the ups and downs, however much they have lost or gained, only they will know themselves. Emotions well up as the memories flow. They decided to let go of all grudges, to care, to share and to always be there.
