Tipped as 2013’s year-end blockbuster, Ch8’s currently airing The Journey: A Voyage (TJAV) is the first of a trilogy series that tells of the hardships and struggles faced by our early forefathers in Singapore (then Nanyang) during the 1920s and 1930s.
As the only period drama series (and one of the most massive shows) produced by the TV station this year, TJAV stands a pretty strong chance at sweeping up nominations and awards at next year’s Star Awards. Plus, this mother of all trilogy dramas is packaged with the necessary characters and sob stories to leave a lasting impression on the jury’s minds.
Featuring a mixture of veteran and young actors, this show drips with melodrama at every turn: you have an embittered wife plotting revenge, a bunch of struggling overworked coolies hoping to strike it rich, sibling rivalries over the family riches and business, betrayal stories and a whole gamut of household drama to cap it all.
As the plot thickens with each episode (the show set to wrap in three weeks’ time), our minds are on only one thing: who is poised for an acting award and who is set to go home disappointed at the non-nomination at next year’s Star Awards.
We may be a little early with the awards ceremony only due in four months’ time, but in the name of good fun, we fished out a handful of the show’s strongest characters (thus far), and attempt to predict the forerunners in the 2014’s Star Awards nomination list.
Consider this a prelude to the upcoming Star Awards ceremonies in April 2014.
